Each group is led by a highly qualified leader who has extensive experience leading cultural exchange experiences and is knowledgeable about the host country. The leader takes responsibility for working with our program partners in the country to ensure a safe, successful experience for our participants.
The 2008 leader to Kenya is our founder, Amos Balongo, who is a native of Kenya and has extensive experience leading groups to Kenya. For four years, Amos was responsible for coordinating and facilitating a six-week cultural experience in Kenya for groups of American teens. In addition, Amos led groups of Kenyan youth to various parts of Kenya to give them the chance to see more of their own country. His knowledge of the country will be invaluable in making this year’s trip to Kenya a great success.
While risk is inherent with travel in a foreign country, we strive to minimize that risk with the following key strategies:
- Preparing a program itinerary that keeps participants out of harms way and utilizes trusted providers in the areas of transportation, lodging, and activities.
- Educating participants about the country, including important safety and security information, and preparing them to make sound decisions to stay safe.
- Providing a strong leader who provides support to group members and is trained to assess situations, make program changes if necessary, and respond to emergencies appropriately.
- Training leaders in Red Cross CPR and First Aid, as well as additional risk management training.
- Maintaining close communication with our program partners in the host country, as to stay updated and informed about relevant safety and security issues.
We encourage you to maximize this opportunity by earning college credits for your service. Credits offered through most colleges and universities during the summer are often available at reduced costs compared to those offered during the academic year. While it may be most ideal to arrange for credits in the form of internship, field experience, practicum, or independent study through your own academic institution, we can also arrange credits for you that can be transferred to your institution upon completion.
