My experience at St. Nicholas Children's home was wonderful and unique. It was unique because it was in the holiday season so most of the children had returned to their guardian's homes.
I found that I was able to spend more one-on-one time with the children. My daily schedule for the week was about four to five hours of landscaping (planting and watering the grounds) in the morning before lunch, which was very rewarding and was a great way to help make the home more friendly and welcoming. My lunch was always wonderfully prepared by Mama and I ate in the guest cottage with some of the members of the diocese. I loved being able to meet other members of the community that is involved with the home. In the afternoons I played card games and soccer with the children, helped Mama cook meals, and helped milk the cows.
My dinners were spent with the children and then we ended each day with a movie in the children's dining area. The children were continuously smiling and had the most vibrant personalities. They were such a joy to be around and I would definitely go back to work again. All the staff was very accommodating and treated us so incredibly well.
I feel honored to have had the opportunity to spend time with the children and staff of St. Nicholas Children's Home. |
